2016 Hawkettes 7s team

The high school all–star season is upon us. Many states are preparing for the 15s Regional Cup Tournaments; others have created events that cater to developing select side programs; and more still are firming up their 7s squads. Iowa, which runs a fall 7s league for high school girls, has named its state 7s team as it looks to defend its Midwest 7s title.

Sixteen players are participating in the Hawkettes 7s program, and head coach Kelsie McDowell will choose 12 athletes for each of the three tournaments this summer. Hannah Fultz, who was named league MVP in the fall, returns as Hawkettes captain. She and junior Grace Estes are the last of the all-star program’s founding members.

“I am really excited to have Madi VanSickel back. Her kicks last year are the reason we won the Midwest championship,” McDowell enthused. “Not to mention we have Sydney Julich, a 15-year-old, first-year player from Ankeny whose potential very much reminds me of a younger Hannah Fultz! I am extremely excited to see what those two can do on the field together.”

Defensively, McDowell is happy to have Christina Odir on the roster once again for her work in the back field.

The coaching staff also received a boost this year. Joining McDowell, assistant coach Jessyka Clark and S&C coach Sicely Hogan is assistant coach Nick Sawhill, who led Des Moines East High School to the girls’ state 7s championship last fall.

The Hawkettes will be heading north to tournaments in Minnesota and Wisconsin, and once details for the Midwest 7s championship are produced, they’ll be circulated as well.
