Ten players who helped the Midwest to a Florida sweep return
The Girls’ High School All-Midwest Thunderbird program has named a 24-player squad that will assemble at Denison University, Ohio, from July 25-30 and contest three games against the Ontario U18s. The Canadian provincial side will be training on-site for the duration of the week as well.
Midwest head coach Garrett Fisher indicated that the squad was selected after scouting the Midwest high school championships, national invitational tournament, Regional Cup Tournaments, as well as tryouts in Ohio and Wisconsin. Coach recommendations were also taken into consideration.
Ten players have returned from the Thunderbirds’ Florida trip in February, including MVP Emily Becker (Knightmares, Wisc.) and Tatum Johnson (North Suburban, Minn.), who will serve as captains against Ontario. Wisconsin leads with seven selections, while Indiana has sent six players to the annual summer assembly. Minnesota (5), Ohio (4) and Michigan (2) are also represented on an all-star team that has pulled its players from 16 different programs.
“We found many new players this past scouting season and are excited to start working with those who we’ve added to our player pool for this next Florida trip [2018] and beyond,” Fisher looked ahead. “The process of identifying young talent to keep our program strong and active is our goal. We want to continue to provide lots of opportunity to players, as they have shown that their the hunger and will to play are beyond strong.”
