Tri-State Round-up: Week 2

There are three pools within the DII Tri-State conference, but as the conference playoff bracket shows, the teams are grouped by rank and size. The five North teams and top South team will advance directly to the Oct. 22 quarterfinals, and the final two spots will be contested between the remaining four South teams. The top-four of six teams in the Central pool will advance to NSCRO playoffs.

Vassar leads the NORTH competition and asserted as much with its second shutout of the season (read the full report). Sarah Mawhinney, Michelle Urrutia, Kayla Lightner and Oshana Reich scored two tries apiece, while Jennie To, Abby Alexander, Alicia Menard-Livingston, Charlotte Benoit and Andrea Ramsay also dotted down. Makena Emery kicked seven conversions. The Brewers are working with more than 50 players this season.

Fellow Poughkeepsie, N.Y., team Marist is also 2-0 and sits in second place in the North standings. Marist defeated RPI 64-7 in week one and followed with a 64-10 victory over Siena on Sunday.

Nine players scored 10 tries. Inside center Kyra Shelby scored twice, and No. 8 Jill Nixon, wing Shaelynn Kelly, lock Bri Panasiuk, fullback Caisi Hecht, prop Wendy Sung-Clarke, flyhalf Melanie Marotta, prop Rachel Lee and wing Ciara Varley also scored. Sung-Clarke also kicked seven conversions for 19 points on the day.

This weekend, Marist will face undefeated Albany, which shut out South divisions’ Hofstra 95-0 last weekend.

In the SOUTH division, 2-0 SUNY Binghamton bested SUNY New Paltz 55-5. Erin Bourke led with three tries, while Megan Foglia and captain Shannon Kelly added two tries apiece. Jasmine Weschler and captain Amanda Ormanian scored a try apiece, and rookie Jade Greenfield converted five tries. Read the full report here.

In the NSCRO (CENTRAL) division, Monroe College defeated Fordham 14-5 in its first-ever match, and Manhattanville topped Drew 44-17.
