The National Intercollegiate Rugby Association (NIRA) is hiring a conference commissioner/director. It’s a paid, part-time position with a flexible start date.

NATIONAL INTERCOLLEGIATE RUGBY ASSOCIATION

TITLE: Conference Commissioner/Director

REPORTS TO: Council of Athletic Administrators

SALARY: $12,000 – $15,000 (part-time)

JOB SUMMARY

The Commissioner/Director is the primary administrator of the NIRA. The Commissioner is responsible for the day-to-day conference operations and serves as a Non-Voting member of the Council of Athletic Administrators and an authorized agent of the corporation. The position works collaboratively with the Council of Athletic Administrators and Head Coaches on operational, strategic and marketing initiatives. The Commissioner provides support and guidance to all other NIRA leadership groups including, but not limited to, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Facilities Operations on Member Institutions’ Campuses, and Sports Information Directors.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Internal and External Relations

  • Work with Council of Administrators to establish NIRA bylaws and governance structure
  • Conduct Meetings/Calls with the Council of Athletic Administrators as needed
  • Oversee the selection and seeding for the NIRA National Tournament
  • Assist Host Institutions for the Quarterfinals, Semifinals and Championships Contests
  • Negotiate and maintain sponsorship agreements with vendors.
  • Coordinate the officiating agreement and work collaboratively with supervisor of officials.

Conference Meetings and Correspondence

  • Prepare and disseminate the agendas for all meetings/calls of the Council of Athletic Administrators and Head Coaches and disseminate minutes.
  • Prepare an Executive Summary for the Council of Athletic Administrators on an annual basis.
  • Post the minutes of the Council of Athletic Administrators on the website in administrative section.
  • Organize and facilitate all meetings of sports information directors, coaches, and the Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Participate on all Post-Season Conference Calls.
  • Handle all conference correspondence.
  • Update, compile and distribute the conference bylaws.

Budget

  • Develop an annual budget for presentation to the Council of Athletic Administrators for their review and approval.
  • Oversee the management of accounts receivable and payable functions of the conference including the billing and deposits of annual membership dues.
  • Prepare bi-annually budget reports for distribution to the Council of Athletic Administrators.

Scheduling

  • Prepare regular season schedule for approval by the Council of Athletic Administrators.
  • Coordinate the distribution of approved schedules via the website and other appropriate avenues.

Compliance

  • Work with Council of Administrators to establish compliance procedures.
  • Act as an interpretative resource to member institutions.
  • Act as a liaison between member institutions, affiliated conference offices, and the NCAA.
  • Distribute rules updates, approved waivers, and hot topics as appropriate to all members.

Sports Information

  • Expand and update the NIRA Website.
  • Disseminate standings, honors, etc. to SIDs/media on weekly basis in-season.
  • Administer selection of weekly honors.
  • Administer post-season academic and athletic honors.
  • Maintain conference statistics and records.
  • Order and distribute all conference, awards, certificates and t-shirts.

Office Operations

  • Ensure the office has the necessary equipment and supplies to facilitate conference business.
  • Manage the technology needs of the conference.

Other Responsibilities

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Council of Athletic Administrators.
  • Serve as an ex-officio member of Ad Hoc and Special Committees.
  • Identify and implement conference strategic initiatives.

COMPENSATION AND REAPPOINTMENT

  • Council of Athletic Administrators shall consider compensation issues and vote on approval of any compensation at a meeting called by the Council of Athletic Administrators. Any compensation increase must be approved by a majority of the total membership of the Council and shall take effect on July 1st.
  • The Council of Athletic Administrators will determine the appropriate length and terms for the Commissioner’s Letter of Appointment.
  • The Commissioner/Director serves at the pleasure of the Council of Athletic Administrators, which may discharge the Commissioner/Director for what it determines to be good cause during the contract term. The Council of Athletic Administrators may elect not to renew the appointment of the Commissioner upon the expiration of any contract term with or without good cause.
