Dartmouth College is hosting the Women’s Collegiate All-American (WCAA) 15s camp next week, June 19-24. Newly appointed USA Women’s National Team (WNT) head coach Rob Cain won’t be in attendance, but Katie Dowty and Wil Snape, as well as coaches from the SOAR Program – Ros Chou, Mel Denham, Jamie Burke, Kate Daley – will run the assembly. The age-grade teams have made some coaching changes, and those details will be released by USA Rugby.
Per USA Rugby, this assembly will be used to:
Identify athletes who have potential to track to the 2021 World Cup, develop longer-term plans for players projecting to 2021, 2024 & 2025, develop critical actions and behaviors for players needed to project to senior 15s.
At present, there are no matches scheduled for the WCAAs this year; however, there are senior WNT assemblies and USA A fixtures on the 2018 calendar.
The 48 players from 23 teams hail from the senior club ranks – Women’s Premier League, Division I and BC’s Premier League (Canada) – as well as the collegiate DI Elite, National Intercollegiate Rugby Association (NIRA), Division I and Division II. There’s a large representation of former Junior All-Americans, and five who played on the first Girls’ High School All-American team (2015 LVI 7s): 7s and 15s Eagle Tess Feury; current MA Sorensen winner McKenzie Hawkins; Dartmouth’s Kat Ramage from Morris; Fallbrook and Central Washington product Michel Navarro; and Life’s Whitney Wilson, who played in Texas.
Finally, keep in mind that not all players were able to accept their invitations to camp. This is a busy time of year, especially for graduating seniors organizing their new lives, and the absence of a player or team isn’t necessarily the result of an oversight.
