NIRA Round-up: Playoffs Approaching

Next weekend will be light in terms of action within the National Intercollegiate Rugby Association (NIRA), as the varsity league will be prepping for the quarterfinals on Nov. 11. Below is a recap of both league games and non-conference matches, as well as links back to individual athletic departments’ recaps (click the box scores). Stay tuned for the updated individual points scored list.

+ Quinnipiac 74-5 AIC

It was senior day for Quinnipiac, and the Bobcats celebrated with a 12-try victory over American International College. Seniors Ilona Maher (4), Tayler Schussler (2) and Rebecca Haight all dotted down, and Flora Poole led with five assists. Siale Alatini accounted for the Yellow Jackets’ try.

+ Norwich 79-5 Mount St. Mary’s

Junior Sheila Decker continues to lead on the scoreboard, dotting down five tries and kicking six conversions for 37 on the day. Sophomore Caitlin Heale has also impressed this season and contributed three tries, two conversions and a dropgoal. Junior Marissa Clark accounted for Mount St. Mary’s try.

Sacred Heart 67-22 Castleton

It was a close game into the third quarter, as Castleton got a leading performance out of Sierra Ostrow-Remy, but Sacred Heart pulled away for an 11-try win. Isabel Cuddy, Allie Rinaldi, Camryn Chester and Kaitlin Lagase had multi-try performances.

+ Ivy League Championship

Dartmouth 22-8 Harvard

In a rematch of last year’s Ivy championship, Dartmouth and Harvard met at Brophy Field in Hanover, N.H. The Big Green scored all of its points in the first half, with senior Frankie Sands leading the way with two tries. Harvard snapped the first-half shutout with a Jenny Kronish penalty. Crimson freshman Erin Wright scored the lone try of the second half. It’s the third-straight title for Dartmouth.

NON-CONFERENCE

+ Brown 62-25 Princeton

Brown was in good control of the Ivy League 3rd place match and moved the ball around well. Marion Sellier, Beth Clifton and Louise Leitao scored multiple tries, and Olivia Duba handled kicking duties.

+ Central Washington 55-0 BYU

Central Washington was also celebrating its seniors last weekend and posted a significant shutout in front of a hometown crowd. Senior Sammy Pinson, junior Yana Manoa and sophomore Sui A’au scored two tries apiece, while Ashley Rolsma, Hannah Lewandowski and Michel Navarro also added five pointers. Emma Leonard kicked five conversions.

+ Penn State 63-31 Army

Sam Sullivan notched two tries against the DI Elite national champion, and Lily Ruland, Gio Ferguson-Lewis and Sydney Dossett contribute a try apiece. Eleanor Burnett knocked over three conversions. Army will now travel to Air Force for an all-academy game.

+ West Chester 39-31 UVA

Arguably the most thrilling game that involved a NIRA member, West Chester edged Virginia Women’s Rugby (UVA). Summer Harris-Jones accounted for three UVA tries, while Golden Rams’ Lili Riley scored 24 points on three tries, three conversions and a penalty kick. Josie Eggert, Harley Divine and Victoria Mellon also scored for West Chester.

Notre Dame College 77-0 Pittsburgh

The Falcons rebounded from its two-game trip to the east coast with a massive shutout against DI Mason-Dixon’s Pittsburgh.
