NIRA Update #8

There were four league games within the National Intercollegiate Rugby Association (NIRA) this weekend and another three non-conference matches. Central Washington and Army doubled up on games from Friday-Sunday. Click the box scores for athletic departments’ write-ups and here for the most recent tally of individual point scorers.

• Central Washington 51-13 Army

Seven different Wildcats scored against the Black Knights en route to Central Washington’s second league win of the season. Sophomore All-Americans Michel Navarro and Sui A’au both scored two tries against Army and finished the weekend with three apiece.

• Quinnipiac 29-24 Central Washington

Although it wasn’t the Bobcats first win over the Wildcats, Sunday’s victory did mark Quinnipiac’s first regular-season victory over Central Washington. After scoring four tries apiece, it was Mikah Maples try in minute 70 that ended up being the decider.

• New England​​ 63-10 Castleton

Sevens was played in this meeting, and Tier 2 leader New England saw four players score two tries apiece. Zoe Adams led all points scorers with 14 on two tries and two conversions. The Nor’easters get a bye week before facing Molloy, and then the Tier 2 championship will occur on Nov. 11.

• Molloy​​ 71-34 Mount St. Mary’s

Sabrina Rodriguez scored a whopping seven tries, while Caroline Nickels added three and Alissa Guerra two. Rodriquez (18) and Nickels (16) are the two leading try scorers in the league.

For Mount St. Mary’s, the game marked the league newcomer’s first against a fellow Tier 2 team. The previous three games against Tier 1 teams saw the Maryland team struggle to put points on the board, but Saturday saw five players get their first tries of their varsity NIRA careers.

NON-CONFERENCE

Army 60-7 Navy

The Black Knights got some recompense on Sunday, silencing the Midshipmen and holding Navy to one converted try in the first half. NIRA All-American Gio Ferguson-Lewis was devastating from No. 8 and led the way with four tries. Freshman Eleanor Burnett kicked five of the 10 conversions. Sunday also marked Senior Day and saw fourth-years Rebecca Stipp and Sydney Dossett celebrate with tries.

Bowdoin 45-5 St. Michael’s

The Polar Bears posted a big win against a traditional power in the Rugby Northeast, although this season has seen additional teams step into contention in the DII conference. Senior co-captain Vianney Gomezgil Yaspik scored three tries, while Satya Kent added another two. Liz D’Angelo and Maddie Squib scored a try apiece, while D’Angelo (3) and Kendall Schutzer (2) handled the extras. Bowdoin will resume NIRA play this Saturday against Molloy College.

West Chester 71-19 Princeton

Senior Lili Riley of Doylestown, Pa., set a new single-game record for points, dotting down five tries and kicking seven conversions for 39 points. Aalea Ray (2), Victoria Mellon, Juah Toe and Casey Evans also scored against the Tigers, which got their tries from Coco Wallace (2) and Sidney Hsu. West Chester extends its home stand against Mason Dixon’s UVA.
