Former Central Washington head coach Mel Denham departed Ellensburg, Wash., for Harvard University in fall 2018. Trevor Richards transferred from the CWU men’s staff to fill the head coach vacancy on an interim basis. The Wildcats dropped a 13-point game to eventual champion Quinnipiac during the National Intercollegiate Rugby Association (NIRA) semifinals, and thus finished tied for third (there was no third-place game).

Richards indicated that he is still serving as interim head coach, but that two candidates, himself included, were interviewed for the permanent position last week, and that there will hopefully be an announcement in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, the spring 2018 is lean. The Wildcats competed at the Vancouver Rugby Festival in early March and is flying to Provo, Utah, to play BYU this weekend.

“At the moment, the only other games we have will be national 7s in May,” Richards wrote.  “There is a chance we will look to get in a tournament or schedule an exhibition for 7s to help us prepare for nationals. But at the moment there is nothing else on the docket.”
