This Sunday, Nov. 9, two of the most active and organized high school all-star programs will meet on the campus of St. Bonaventure University for a 15s friendly. The Midwest U18 Thunderbirds and Elite Girls Rugby League (EGRL) Eastern States squad will report to Olean, N.Y., where scouts will be in attendance and watching 45 players from seven states play some high-level rugby. Kickoff is at 9 a.m. ET on Marra Athletic Field, and Mainstream Sports has the YouTube livestream.

The EGRL Eastern States squad includes 24 players from Doylestown (Pa.), Morris (N.J.) and Maryland’s West Carroll and North Bay. Seniors (11) and juniors (10) dominate the roster, while two sophomores and a freshman play up.

The Midwest U18 Thunderbirds are bringing 21 players from Illinois (2), Indiana (4), Iowa (2), Ohio (6) and western Pennsylvania (7). This fall assembly is a bit of a unique fixture in that the Baby Birds don’t traditionally play 15s until the new year, when the annual U18 all-star 15s tournament occurs in Florida. EGRL is in a similar situation in that none of its member states are playing 15s — but rather 7s — right now. However, the league does hold 15s camps and inner-squad matches during the fall to stay 15s primed.
