When E.T. Wilbur III started coaching rugby 10-plus years ago, there were nine girls’ high school teams playing 7s in New Mexico. Covid demolished those numbers, and the rebuild has been slow; however, there has been progress. Albuquerque Youth Rugby United (AYRU) – which Wilbur oversees as president – has an active all-star team that allows players to experience the sport outside of New Mexico, and the girls are very much part of that programming.
