Rugby is emerging from winter break and a handful of competitions, as well as larger events, are taking place this weekend. Traditionally, the weekly scores post doesn’t include much context but given the number of games this weekend, there’s space for some competition detail. Something missing? Message Jackie Finlan. The 2026 annual WRCRA Conference occurs this Friday-Sunday in Denver. The theme this year is “Building Resilient Programs, Coaches and Players,” and conference director Kerri Heffernan has done a stellar job curating a lineup of keynote speakers, presenters and rugby luminaries who will bring that topic to life. Learn more.
As for actual national teams, the Eagles 7s team will be the first to resurface this year, joining the third stop on the HSBC SVNS Series at the end of the month (Jan. 31-Feb. 1) in Singapore.
SENIOR CLUB
Generally, this is the time for the primarily spring-based 15s competitions to dominate the scorelines. On either side of this block are the strictly fall-based leagues in the Midwest, New England and Empire — all of which have named their champions already (and thus reps to DII and DIII Super Regionals); and then the split-season leagues, which contest a portion of their season in the fall, take a winter break, and then finish out in the spring.

WEST REGION SHOWCASE occurs this Friday and Saturday, and in year two has fine-tuned the college and USA Rugby recruitment opportunities while keeping the competition level at a premium. Read more from Belmont Shore Director of Operations Robert Pahulu, who is hosting the Long Beach, Calif., event.
Also in California, it’s Week 2 for the SoCal HS 7s season. Standings list 12 teams participating, although one squad has yet to play a game. Texas will shake off the rust with a friendly tournament, Ruggapalooza, in Houston, and keep that developmental vibe through this month when regional round robins occur on Jan. 31. The first of five qualifiers will occur on Feb. 14 and the spring will culminate with an April 25 state championship.

COLLEGE
College Rugby Association of America (CRAA) plays 15s in the spring and so those warmer-weather states will dominate the pitches for the first couple months of the new year. The DI Pacific Desert conference, which is based in Arizona and SoCal, will contest its first set of league games. SoCal’s Claremont and newly DI Cal Poly SLO, which will compete in Pacific Mountain, also play the first of two competitive friendlies. National Collegiate Rugby (NCR) contests its 7s championship season in the spring and the kickoff is next weekend with all-stars in Atlanta.
