USA Rugby details the country’s state championships, but some insight is needed for the girls’ high schools (see updated listing below).
First, if a state isn’t listed below, then that doesn’t necessarily mean that there are no girls’ teams competing. Vermont, for example, competes in the Capital District of Rugby New York. Several areas ignore state lines and combine for the sake of more competition.
Other states were just missing from the list, like Montana and Wisconsin, which is one of the most active, well organized girls high school leagues in the country. They’ve been added back in. But there are some cases in which a state is missing because there aren’t enough teams to field a league, like Florida, where only Sebastian River is consistently playing.
Second, some states host championships for multiple divisions. SoCal (which isn’t a state but is treated like one alongside NorCal) contests U18 and U16 (and U14) title games, and Ohio runs DI and DII leagues that culminate in state trophies.
And then there’s 7s. Iowa and Texas run 7s-only leagues, so that’s why they’re on the list. But plenty of states run legitimate 7s season either alongside their 15s league, like Colorado, or opposite it, like Oregon.
