Two days after announcing its 12-player squad for the Sydney 7s, the USA Women’s 7s team has replaced Bulou Mataitoga with Hope Rogers. The Eagle 15s captain will have the opportunity to earn her first 7s cap during the second stop on the HSBC World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series.

Rogers relocated to the San Diego area in fall 2016, joining a small group of Eagle forwards participating in the foundling 15s residency. These players have been training at the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center (EATC), integrating with the 7s residents.

“I’ve had thoughts of playing 7s before, but never thought it would actually happen,” Rogers wrote on the morning of her selection. “It’s crazy! I love 7s. I’m developing an entirely new skill set. Everyday I’m learning something new to be better at 7s and I’ve seen it positively add a new element to my 15s game as well.”

The 24-year-old prop has already competed in a Women’s Rugby World Cup and most recently served as captain during the 15s Eagles’ fall tour to France. Rogers has distinguished herself as a mobile front row, who is nearly unstoppable close to the try line but also comfortable flowing into the open field. How will that translate on the world 7s stage?

“I recognize I’m not a typical 7s player, which adds some nerves, but I’m hoping to play to my strengths and add something valuable to the team,” Rogers wrote. “It’s like a dream come true being out here at the [EATC] and getting the opportunity to represent my country in 7s now too. I’m very grateful and excited.”

Rogers isn’t the only USA 7s debutant heading to Australia. Northeast product Sarah Buonopane is getting her shot, too. Check out a fantastic highlight reel compiled by Next Level Rugby.
