Girls and women’s rugby is at the core of The Rugby Breakdown (TRB), a site that produces original content for those who support the sport in the U.S. But TRB needs its community, too. After two-and-a-half years and more than 1,600 articles (the majority of which are researched and written by me, Jackie Finlan), this full-time profession does not afford a minimum-wage income.
The good news is that there’s a way to sustain the site and the one-person staff through monthly pledges, which begin at $2/month.
IS TRB WORTH A CUP OF COFFEE PER MONTH? IF SO, CONSIDER A SUBSCRIPTION!
Last spring, I launched a pledge drive with the goal of securing enough monthly subscriptions to account for 40% of a modest income, and thus test the appetite for women’s rugby news coverage. That goal, when combined with one-time donations, was met after three months, and now it’s time to plot out a route to a sustainable career:
– Today, 5% of TRB’s readers are monthly subscribers
– By the end of 2018, convert 10% of the readership to subscribers
– By May 1, 2019, convert 15% of the readership to subscribers
– By Oct. 1, 2019, convert 20% of the readership to subscribers
Achieving these benchmarks will mean no more fundraising will be necessary.
[THANK YOU, CURRENT PATRONS! It only takes a $2/month!]
We’re going to keep pushing until the end of the year, and while we’ll offer examples of why TRB is valuable, consider where you’d got to find a score, or learn whether American high schoolers ever play abroad, or answer the question, “Does show choir translate well to rugby,” (The answer is: Yes) if The Rugby Breakdown folded.
Also, who would compile a fab photo album like the one below, where all 34 players named to the USA 15s touring squad?! (PS, TRB took half the photos).
