Half of the ranked teams were idle last weekend, but not necessarily because of bye weeks. Some weather canceled games but forfeits also made their marks on teams’ regular-season build.

Winona State endured ANOTHER forfeit-win weekend and even though the Black Katts are 4-0, the Minnesota team has actually played just one league game (against North Dakota). And this juncture, not even Winona State knows how good Winona State is.

Vassar is in a better position – both geographically and preparation wise – and takes over the top spot. When Albany forfeited its game last weekend and eliminated itself from the post-season, per the Tri-State commissioner, the team was removed from the rankings. The Brewers were able to quickly substitute a game against Bloomsburg in Pennsylvania, however. Vassar coach Tony Brown described the game in detail (read more), and noted that the Huskies, anticipating a bye week, were missing at least eight players in the 48-7 decision.

With the vacancy provided by Albany, Delaware enters the rankings. The Blue Hens defeated previously ranked Temple 10-5 last weekend. Delaware will face Kutztown this weekend and test its place in the Top 20.

All of the other ranked teams that competed last weekend won their games, and the only swap occurred in Upstate New York. Cortland improved to 5-0 with a 29-point win over Rochester*. Cortland and Buffalo State, like last year, are the teams to beat in this conference.

*Previous version of this article erroneously indicated that Rochester was undefeated, but it’s 2-3.

There are some big matches to watch this weekend with crossovers like DII’s Bryant and Youngstown State taking on DI Boston University and Kent State, respectively; and the first of the playoffs, as Tri-State hosts its play-in round Sunday. Stay tuned.
