New York 7s is here and Atlantis is once again fielding girls’ high school teams in the Premier and Open divisions. Twenty-three players from 11 states will funnel onto Randall’s Island, and only after the first day of training will players be divided into two squads.
“This is going to be a ‘different’ year for us as many of the girls that we’ve had as our core players for the past few years graduated last year and have begun their collegiate careers,” Atlantis manager Diane Ramage explained.
Five of those recent grads competed in the National Intercollegiate Rugby Association (NIRA) National Championship Final Four last weekend: Dartmouth freshmen Emily Henrich and Ariana Ramsey, Army West Point’s Alex DiMarco and Kaitlyn Schwarting, and Quinnipiac’s Clara Lemal-Brown. Morgan Freeman is with DI Elite national champion Lindenwood, Matalasi Morrissette is the starting flyhalf with BYU, and Alie Ramage is starting scrumhalf with South Carolina.
“We’re excited to be building another group of core players that have been with us for a few tournaments already and some exciting newcomers to wear Atlantis teal for the first time,” Ramage added.
There are seven rookies in the group. Some are siblings of former or current Atlantis reps, and others mark the introduction of a new high school team to the select side’s ranks. They’re balanced by a wealth of experience who boast recent experience with the High School All-Americans and Team USA during the Youth Olympic Games qualifier.
Penn State coach Kate Daley, who recently returned from the USA Eagles’ November tour as assistant coach, will lead the Elite team, and Penn State grad Kate Flanagan will serve as Open head coach.
