The Capital Selects and USA Rugby South Panthers are heading to Furman University (Greenville, S.C.) for two 15s games on Jan. 19. The all-star programs are two of the most active and organized in the country, and next weekend’s games will feature a wide range of experience.
The Capital Selects is a Geographic Union program (the South is a Competitive Region), and its top side features senior club players, save Catholic University’s Emma Nelsen. NOVA leads all selections with 12, while former WPL team D.C. Furies (7), Severn River (5) and Norfolk (5) also have good representation across both teams. The developmental side includes another six collegians, who will benefit greatly from this uptick in competition.
The Atlanta Harlequins account for five of the USA Rugby South spots, but all told, there are representatives from 22 teams (excluding one unattached). There are also five collegians in the group. The Panthers play 7s, 10s and 15s (and played Life University), are active participants in RAN and field age grade all-stars for its girls and women, so the player pool has many opportunities to compete.
