No one was more surprised than Iowa State when the Cyclones won the Hawkeye Classic’s automatic qualifier to the USA Rugby Division I College 7s National Championship. The team was looking for a light-hearted run-out to kick off the spring and ended up winning a berth to national tournament during Memorial Day Weekend.
Per Iowa State grad student Allison Brost:
“We’re still in the celebration phase right now. … But there’s definitely been a shift. We went into the tournament with the mentality of having fun and just playing rugby, and we ended up winning. We’re still working hard and now we have the motivation to be the best we can be.”
