Rugby Scholarship

2025 marks the third year in which the Anderson Women’s Rugby Scholarship is offering scholarships for girls and women looking to continue their rugby careers into college. The total amount available is $25,000, with the finalists receiving $10,000 apiece, and third place banking $5,000. The deadline for applications is May 23, 2025, and winners are announced June 23.

Heather Anderson is a rugby mom based in Avon, Ind., and her daughter is a current senior and rugby player at Lander University in South Carolina. Anderson appreciates all the positive attributes that rugby has developed in her daughter, and the annual scholarship helps more girls and women continue that transformative process into college by alleviate some of the financial burden of higher education.

High school seniors and current undergraduate, graduate and/or trade school students are the target audience. Review the scholarship details, create a profile on bold.org, and then write a 400-600-word essay answer the following question:

Please tell us what rugby family means to you. What hopes do you have for playing rugby in college?

For collegiate applicants, be prepared to show proof of current membership on a rugby team. The deadline for submissions is May 23, 2025, and then the selection committee will review entries and select three winners. As mentioned, the two finalists will receive $10,000 apiece, and the third-best essay will win $5,000.

In addition to benefactor Heather Anderson, Kelly Romano will also be reviewing essays. The Rugby Indiana dynamo recently presented on several youth and coaching panels at the 2025 WRCRA Conference in Denver and impressed with an unrivaled depth of creativity and energy.

“I don’t take off for grammar or spelling,” Romano said while promoting the scholarship in Denver. “As someone who is dyslexic, I just want to hear the story.”

The first scholarship went to Jennifer Gould from Oklahoma State University in 2023. Last year, Ana Beasley from Rochester, N.Y., won the top prize and her winning essay is currently posted on the scholarship page.
