The Girls’ High School Midwest All-Star Championship was originally scheduled for this weekend in Elkhart, Ind., but the 15s event was unfortunately canceled. But select-side rugby will occur this Saturday in Carmel, Ind., as four squads boot up for four 15s matches.
The Wisconsin Selects are heading to Indiana this weekend, and the all-star team is bringing 41 players from 10 teams. Head coach Jeff Noe is fielding A and B sides, and he’ll get the support he needs from assistant coaches Alex Glorioso (Catholic Memorial), Betsy Wendelberger (Knightmares) and Mackenna Marinello (Bruisers). SPASH (Stevens Point) leads selections with 11 players, while the Bruisers and Catholic Memorial have five and six players, respectively, on the travel squad.
The squad will be split into two separate teams in Indiana, and both the A and B sides will play Indy Speed and Carmel.
RJ Moser is running the Indy Speed and he has selected 19 players who have been able to make the select side’s three practices so far. There has been interest from north Indiana teams whose players were unable to travel to the Indianapolis training sessions, so there may be game-day roster additions from those teams.
Kelly Romano is head coach of Carmel’s high school (and middle school) team, and is coming off an impressive 15s season (Carmel nearly knocked off the eventual champion, Charger, in a 10-7 semifinal decision). Romano is also trying to work a middle school competition on the day – stay tuned.
