Chicago Lions rugby

USA Club Rugby has released the participating teams and pools for the Women’s 7s National Championship that, in conjunction with the men’s tournament, takes place Aug. 8-9 in Madison, Wis. It’s a 16-team field with pool play and the first round of knockouts occurring on Saturday, and Sunday playing out to place. There are two fields in play, and women’s pool play action begins Saturday at 9:40 a.m. and ends with the 4:40 p.m. matches. The Bowl quarterfinals also occur on Saturday starting at 6:40 p.m., and then Sunday resumes at 9 a.m. with knockouts. The women’s Cup final kicks off at 4:40 p.m.

The Midwest leads in terms of representation (3 teams) and highest seeds, and reigning national champion Chicago Lions has added its second side to accommodate a late withdrawal. The Lions’ second side finished third at the Midwest championships and is the 14th seed overall. Read more.

The Mid-Atlantic (Scion, Philly), Red River (HEB, Dallas Quins), NorCal (Life West, Berkeley), Pacific Northwest (WAC, ORSU) and South (Phoenix, Orlando) all have two teams apiece. SoCal (San Diego), Frontier (Colorado Gray Wolves) and Northeast (Boston) have one rep each.

The top-two teams in each pool will advance to the Cup quarterfinals and play out to 8th place. The 3rd- and 4th-place teams in each pool will funnel into the Bowl bracket, which determines teams 9th-16th.
