CRAA RUGBY

College Rugby Association of America (CRAA) is actually hosting two separate 7s national championships for its women’s teams. A Premier Division will compete May 6-7 in Houston, Texas, and then Division I and Division II teams will compete toward their respective titles on May 13-14 in Dallas, Texas.

The Premier Division is part of CRAA’s joint 7s and 15s championship weekend. The women’s DI and DII spring 15s titles will be contested Saturday, May 6, and the 7s competition will occur across two days (the actual dates are in question, as the press release offers both May 5-7 and May 6-7 as date ranges). The 16-team Premier 7s Division will include DI Elite and NIRA (NCAA) programs, much like last year’s R7CC. CRAA hasn’t explained how teams are qualifying or if the event is purely an invitational, but the following programs have listed the event on their respective schedules: Army, Dartmouth, Davenport, Harvard, Life, Long Island Univ., Penn State, Sacred Heart Univ.

The new bit of information is the CRAA 7s National Championships for DI and DII teams. It is a separate event that occurs May 13-14 at Lake Highlands Park in Dallas, Texas. The Dallas RFC is the local host. The schedule reflects a 12-team Division I, a 12-team Division II, and fields that are divided into four-team pools. Saturday will see everyone play three pool games and then Sunday is single elimination.

Traditionally, 7s championships feature conference winners, runners-up and/or at-large teams (at-large applications are due April 16). So far, we’ve seen the DII West Coast crown Cal Poly SLO its conference champion and San Jose State the runner-up. There are more conference championships the next two weekends, and we’ll track teams as they advertise their participation in Dallas.
