Even though the DI Elite / DIA regular season ended on March 27 and seeds had been determined, the playoff scenario was not immediately known. Penn State’s Return-to Play timetable extended deeper into the spring, and so the Nittany Lions didn’t play any of its league mates in 2021. Nonetheless, there was a pathway for Penn State to play into the post-season, but that option was just cancelled today.

Lindenwood University (#1), Central Washington (#2), Life University (#3) and BYU (#4) played full-contact 15s games in February and March, but Penn State was able to take the pitch against another team until April 2. Last Friday, the Nittany Lions traveled to West Chester University and worked multiple lineups in a 45-5 friendly win.

The DI Elite / DIA had scheduled a semifinal play-in match on April 10, with the #5 team traveling to the #4 team, and then the victor traveling to the #1 team for the April 17 semifinals. BYU had Penn State’s on its schedule, but announced the cancellation today.

BYU head coach Tom Waqa confirmed that the Cougars will be advancing to the April 17 semifinals and traveling to St. Charles, Mo., for a 7 p.m. CT kickoff against Lindenwood Univ. This movement did not impact the other semifinal and sees #3 Life travel to #2 Central Washington for a 12 p.m. PT kickoff.

The national championship will be held on Saturday, May 1 at the higher seed’s home. Stay tuned for previews.
