The final stages of the USA Rugby DII Fall College Championship were fantastic, and no game was decided by more than two tries. The results forced a reordering in the top portion of the rankings.

Winona State ended the 15s season undefeated and played the most thrilling game of the final four against the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in the semifinals. Read more. The teams traded leads throughout the match, and the Black Katts emerged with a six-point win into the final. On the other side of the bracket, semifinal newcomer Colorado School of Mines unseated 2018 champion Vassar College 29-15 for the upset of the tournament.

The Black Katts won the final 19-10 over Mines and thus overtook the top rating in the rankings.

Coast Guard went on to beat Vassar 39-27 in the third place match. The Bears made a convincing argument for the second-place ranking, having gone toe-to-toe with Winona State in the semifinals. But Mines is No. 2 after a spectacular debut at its first fall championship weekend. Mines had no prior experience against Vassar and was undeterred by its underdog status, and that achievement, and the close final, shouldn’t be watered down.

Finally, with Vassar moving from first to fourth, a couple of the regional outcomes are weighted differently – for example, Hartford’s 24-12 quarterfinal loss to Coast Guard is higher regarded than Bryant’s 33-7 quarterfinal loss to Vassar. Same with IUP’s 22-10 loss to Mines.

Now that the fall 15s season is over, the collegiate scene moves toward the spring 15s season, and that’s where the rankings will pick back up.
