There is plenty of high school rugby in the fall, but only a few states contest their official championship season in the front half of the rugby year. Southeast Polk won 7s-only Iowa, and 7s-only Colorado rescheduled its state championship for this weekend. DSHA repeated as Wisconsin 15s state champion, and Michigan will award its 15s trophy this weekend.
Michigan held its semifinals last weekend in Lansing. Reigning champion Sparta-Rock defeated Grand Haven 58-0 and saw Grace Gohl (pictured) score four of the team’s tries. Similarly, Grandville beat Berkley 59-0 to keep its undefeated record intact. Livingston County and Lakeview also played each other for 5th place overall, and the former triumphed 35-5.
Grandville High School will host Sparta-Rock on Sunday, Nov. 10 for the state championship, and the match will mark the teams’ third consecutive title bout against each other. When the squads met each other in mid-September for their regular-season match, Grandville shut out Sparta-Rock 29-0.
In addition to the state final, Grand Haven and Berkley will contest the 3rd place match at Grandville. Stay tuned for coverage.
