UNITED STATES — Women’s Elite Rugby (WER) is honored to host the Legacy Cup, a new women’s national rugby championship, which will take place in early September. The 2024 Legacy Cup will showcase standout athletes aiming to compete in WER’s inaugural 2025 season, a testament to the storied legacy of women’s rugby in the United States, as the sport continues to flourish.
The 2024 Legacy Cup Semi-Finals will take place between the top four Women’s Premier League (WPL) teams on Saturday, September 7 at Madison United Rugby Club in Madison, Wisconsin. The first semi-final game between Seed #2 and Seed #3 will start at 1PM CDT. The second semi-final game between Seed #1 and Seed #4 will start at 3PM CDT.
The Legacy Cup Final will be held on Saturday, September 14 at MacPherson Stadium at Bryan Park in Greensboro, North Carolina between the winners of the two semi-final games. The championship game will take place at 2PM EST.
“The Legacy Cup is an event for all rugby fans new and old. We welcome everyone to come out, have fun and enjoy some intense competition,” said WER Vice President Katherine Aversano. “There are many new eyes on rugby after the U.S. women’s rugby sevens team won bronze at the Paris Olympics and we are thrilled the world has now seen that the women who play this game are inspiring, intense and tough. We are excited for people to fall in love with our athletes just as they did with our Olympians.”
The Legacy Cup is a celebration of all the women’s rugby players and administrators who continue to dedicate their energy and time to the growth of the sport. It’s a time to highlight their monumental achievements while also looking toward the future of women’s rugby in the United States.

Have you heard any plans to incorporate a promotion/relegation system between WER and WPL?
Wonderful coverage as always.
I don’t think it’s been worked out, but honestly, I don’t know what the WPL will look like in the WER era. There are 7 WPL teams nationwide, and now 3 of those teams are in WER cities. I’ll poke around.
It makes sense the WPL might go away but I think a mid-tier like the WPL would be such a benefit for future expansion and growth. Going back to using the club nationals to promote & relegate gives a club the opportunity to prepare for professional expansion and make its case as a semi-pro club.
Just some thoughts.
