The Texas Rugby Union kicked off its college 7s series in Houston last weekend, and will continue with three more events.
Twelve teams across Texas and Oklahoma are involved in the series, and they include Division I, Division II and NSCRO programs. The series results will determine which teams represent the region at USA Rugby’s DI and DII College 7s National Championship (May 22-24, Charlotte, N.C.) and the NSCRO 7s National Championship (April 25-26, Raleigh, N.C.).
During round one, 11 of the 12 committed teams (UT El Paso did not show) traveled to Houston for the series opener. The tournament format does not feed into a championship match and final places, but rather, teams play four games and standings points are banked. North Texas and UT San Antonio went 4-0 last Saturday and lead the standings with 12 points apiece. Texas A&M and Texas went 3-1, while another four teams went 2-2 for eight points. Full results and standings below.
The series will resume on March 7 in Norman, Okla., followed by a third stop in Austin on April 4. There is also an April 25 event on the calendar, but it conflicts with NSCRO nationals.
