The Southern California Rugby Football Union (SCRFU) is hosting its 3rd annual Women’s Day on Saturday, March 15 in Ventura, Calif. Twelve Division I and Division II senior clubs will contest 15s league matches, and the event will be a superb showcase for the many rugby options available in SoCal.

2023 marked the first SCRFU Women’s Day, and it was born out of the pandemic and the attrition of senior club rugby teams.

“I was Women’s DI Rep at the time and saw that we had unfortunately lost several teams during the lockdown, and it was the fewest number of women’s teams I have seen in SCRFU history,” SCRFU Match Secretary Allison Truong traced the genesis of the event. “Having a day where we can all play together and build camaraderie seemed like a great way to build bonds between the existing clubs and foster growth. The first year we actually held the social at my home and it was honestly such a fun day with everyone.”

The first year included Division I teams only. Last year, Division II joined the party. In 2025, DII grew to nine teams, and DI has four members (including Tempe, which left the Southwest Rugby Union). Twelve of 13 teams have games scheduled for March 15, and the largest SCRFU Women’s Day to date will come together at Ventura Community Park (901 South Kimball Road). Additionally, Vortex Rugby has designed merchandise specifically for the event, and Women’s DII Rep Sara Dechance has signed on as tournament photographer.

“I have to mention Lizzy here and how critical she has been as this event has grown,” Truong called out SCRFU Secretary Elizabeth Stanly of the Empire Monarchs. “This year, she has been the most involved with planning and is a total rockstar.

“I am honestly so proud of how women’s rugby has grown in SoCal in the last couple of years,” Truong closed. “We have added new teams every year and there are so many dedicated folks out there rebuilding clubs or building new ones, and it is incredible to see.”
