The USA South has named its Senior Women and Girls’ U18 teams for the joint all-star event occurring Feb. 18-19 in St. Petersburg, Fla. The seniors will play the Midwest Thunderbirds on Sunday, while the U18s will compete in a two-day, 15s round robin against the Midwest High School Thunderbirds and the Elite Girls Rugby League’s (EGRL’s) first-ever select side.

This winter all-star event is rooted in the Midwest Baby Birds’ annual winter tour to Florida, and 2023 marks the regional all-star program’s 7th trip to the South. Garrett Fisher was ecstatic to see the trip evolve into more of an event with more teams and more age groups present. Joel Bonnaud returns as USA South U18 head coach and he’s joined on staff by Renee McLane. They’ve selected 23 players from the Carolinas, Florida, Tennessee and Texas to the representative team.

Once the high schoolers wrap up on Sunday, the senior sides will take the pitch at Jack Puryear Park. The South and Midwest actually saw each other at the Mary Graham All-Star Competition in December 2022. The Panthers beat the Thunderbirds’ second team 53-5 for the Tier 2 championship and will compete in Tier 1 in 2023. (The Midwest’s first team won Tier 1.) Since then, the South hosted and beat the Capital Selects 31-17. On March 4, Capital and Midwest will meet in Pittsburgh for a 15s match, and then the Thunderbirds will travel to DI nationals-bound Metropolis Valkyries for a May 20 tuneup.

In Florida, Chris Martin serves as South head coach and is joined by player-coach T Fletcher and Simone Smith on staff.
