Women’s Elite Rugby (WER) is now accepting applications for head coaches to lead one of the teams in the inaugural six markets: Boston, Chicago, Denver, New York, San Francisco Bay Area, and the Twin Cities. Candidates must be excited to work in a startup league while building the foundation for the future. WER is the newest women’s professional league on the US landscape. Formed as a single-entity league, WER is focused on delivering an entertaining brand of rugby to the US market and providing the highest standard of rugby available to our players.
In collaboration with Director of Rugby Jamie Burke and WER Leadership, the head coach is expected to assume the overall responsibility for the leadership, planning, management, and co-ordination of their playing personnel on and off the field. They will strive to deliver excellence, through strong leadership, excellent communication and interpersonal skills while demonstrating an experienced tactical and technical knowledge base that will enhance their respective teams.
Specific Duties
- Leadership: Establish a team vision and team values, standards, and protocols that fit within the goals of WER; build and maintain strong working relationships with the team and team management; provide leadership and growth opportunities to support coaching staff’s professional goals;
- Team preparation and development of effective training principles;
- Team and game-day selections; and
- Identify, recruit, and develop professional players to compete within the game plan, and develop a positive sustainable winnable culture setting the foundation for growth of the team and league.
- It is expected that the successful candidate will abide by all written policies and procedures of Women’s Elite Rugby.
Required Minimum Qualifications
- World Rugby Level 2 (USA L300) or equivalent
- 3-5 years of assistant coaching experience or 1-3 years of head coaching experience at the senior or professional levels with demonstrated performance success
- Specialist skill set for at least one area of the sport (set-piece, attack, defense, etc.)
- Experience recruiting, developing and supervising a team of coaches and support staff
- CPR/First aid certified. Must be completed within 2 months of hiring
- Must be eligible to work within the United States prior to commencing employment
- Must be able to travel internationally in the course of your duties
- Must pass all customary background checks
- Ability to work independently and to exercise sound judgment and discretion
- Demonstrated commitment to supporting the development of athletes from varied backgrounds
- Ability to work weekends and nights
Preferred Qualifications: 3-5 years of head coaching senior level women’s teams in an elite or professional competition within the previous 12 months
Background Screening Statement: A background check will be required.

Salary range: $30,000-$60,000
Hours: Full-time, approx. 10-month contract
