The 2016 Wisconsin all-star team returns several members to its all-state team.
Wisconsin Girls Rugby (WGR) has named its 2016-17 All-State Team.
Of the 40 players named to the team, 18 are forwards and 22 are backs. Seniors account for 22 spots, while the junior and sophomore classes sent eight players apiece to the all-state team. Two freshmen – Haley Crow of Catholic Memorial and Jackie Jarosz of Divine Savior Holy Angels (DSHA) JV – made the list.
State champion DSHA leads with 13 selections, while runner-up Catholic Memorial accounts for nine. Oak Creek is in third with five, Brookfield has four, and Pulaski three. Appleton sent two players to the all-state team, while Fond du Lac, Muskego-Vernon, Kettle Morraine and Middleton each have one representative.
There are several repeat all-state selections, but only Emma Conrad of Fond du Lac and Megan Bird of Oak Creek are three-time all-stars.
Typically, the WGR All-State Team is announced in November, but inclement weather delayed the board’s meeting and approval of the list until now. Fond du Lac head coach Amanda Pohle, a Crusaders alumna and former Kevin Higgins scholarship winner, was elected WGR president and leads an almost all-female board (see more).
