BIDDEFORD, Maine – The Bryant University club rugby team defeated the University of New England 22-17 on Friday night at UNE Blue Storm Stadium. The Bulldogs compete in the DII Rugby Northeast conference, while the Nor’easters compete in Tier 2 of the National Intercollegiate Rugby Association.

Approximately five minutes into the game, Melissa Mallahan’s try put Bryant up 5-0, and there the scoreline held until two minutes left in the half. New England tied it up after Caitlin Paredes’ try, but right before the break, Rylee Van Epps dotted down Bryant’s second try. Margaret Mellitt kicked the extras for the 12-5 lead.

The Bulldogs built even more momentum and sent Mallahan and Anisa Branch into the try zone, 22-5. During the final 10 minutes, however, New England scored 10 second-half points through Alex Wing-LaClaire and a penalty try on Emma Foss, 22-17.

Bryant officially kicks off its league season next weekend against St. Michael’s College, while New England plays its first NIRA game against Molloy College at Brown University in Providence, R.I.
