5 U.S.-Based Teams Compete in Barbados

In November and December, there’s an unofficial circuit of international 7s tournament for American select sides and academies, starting with New York 7s, the Dubai Invitational and Barbados World 7s. This weekend is the final stop and includes five U.S.-based teams.

American Rugby Pro Training Center (ARPTC) is a mixture of returners – like those who represented one of two teams at the 2019 club 7s national championship (*) – and USA 7s Eagles and pool players in Emily Henrich, Alena Olsen, Stephanie Rovetti and Kayla Lawson. Alex Wantlin from Wellington, Fla., and United’s Liz Tafuna are the high-achieving teenagers.

Nine of Atlantis’ 12 players come from Women’s Premier League clubs Glendale, Atlanta and Chicago North Shore. Princeton’s Coco Wallace and Sarah Dillender are the collegians, and Josie Ziluca took over the Ivy League program this fall. Lauren Thunen, who graduated UC Santa Barbara last spring, is the capped 7s Eagle.

Scion is U.S. based but brings a diverse squad to the Caribbean. Eagle Kiki Morgan and Emily Fulbrook are the long-time Sirens, while Megan Rom and Olivia Ortiz bring USA 15s experience to the squad. Kate Herren also played with Scion while a USA 7s resident and has upped her rugby experience with the USMC team at the Armed Forces Championship. Marisa Hall comes out of the top DI Elite program, Lindenwood University. The rest of the roster is from England, New Zealand, Spain and Wales.
