Some close results see some positional swaps in the DI Spring College Ranking this week. As the collegiate landscape moves into the spring break block, the competition really staggers, with some teams enduring a month-long break – or longer – from competitive 15s.

The Blue Ridge was relatively active, and league favorite Virginia Tech won its sixth and final matrix match 81-12 against NC State. UVA also finished league 6-0, but its final two victories were forfeits wins. The team scrambled for some competition and NOVA women answered, but there is a long break in competitive 15s games ahead. Blue Ridge is supposed to host crossover challenge matches on April 4 and then UVA will host finals on April 11. The best game of the weekend occurred between Clemson and USC, with the former winning 15-10. James Madison also beat UNC 42-17.

The rankings swapped UVA and Stanford, and the rearrangement has more to do with the former’s inconsistency in competition. The Cardinal beat Cal 26-19 at home, recompense for its lone loss of the season, and is better for it. Stanford and UC Davis – which beat Fresno State 29-19 – have one more league game apiece, while Cal has three. The Bears are still ranked above the Aggies, mostly based on their performances against Stanford, but they play this Sunday and will settle that debate.

Regardless of how the Pacific Mountain West shakes out these final couple of weeks, Stanford, Cal and UC Davis will advance to the conference playoffs, which integrates PMRC North victor University of Oregon. Western Washington pulled away in the second half against Oregon State, winning 40-21 and ending the season with a position swap. Vikings outside center Nina Scruton scored three tries.

There’s been no further mention of PMRC’s Tier 2 playoffs, a new concept this season, but if it were to come off, Fresno State and Chico State would travel to the Pacific Northwest to play Western Washington and Oregon State.

The three ranked Pacific Desert teams were idle, but the conference did see CSU Northridge bank its second-straight tie: 22-22 against Arizona State. In Florida, UCF’s first side was idle, but its DII team beat Eckerd 14-12 in the closest game that league has seen in a while.
