A selection of leagues across the country cap their fall rugby seasons with the naming of all-state or all-conference teams. Generally, these are honorary teams in that the players are voted onto the squad and will not assemble to actually compete in an event. But that’s not exclusively the case. Either way, a virtual all-star team is an easy way to highlight individual performances and radiate pride through a league’s membership, regardless of where a team finished in the standings.

There are several state and regional all-star teams that do compete in the fall, and players are generally named to those teams via tryouts and coach recommendations. In the high school sphere, Old North State 15s (N.C.) and New York 7s saw select sides assemble. And a special showing between PNW Loggers and Idaho’s Toa was a highlight of the Premier Rugby 7s All-Star event in Portland. In January 2025, the NCR All-Star 7s Tournament (Ga.) will bring together a slew of conference all-star teams. And in the senior club realm, eight select sides competed toward Mary Graham All-Star 15s titles in Texas.

HIGH SCHOOL

The following high school rugby organizations named honorary all-state teams at the end of their seasons. Do note, however, that there were many more states active this fall than those listed below. Indiana (Westside Revenge), Missouri (Saints), North Carolina (Hough), NorCal (St. Francis HS), Ohio (West Pitt), Oregon (Summit HS), Tennessee (Father Ryan), among others named champs. Fall 2024 also saw some states — like Connecticut and Washington — lean into 7s.

WISCONSIN 15s

Wisconsin is one of two states — Michigan being the other — that plays its championship 15s season in the fall. Divine Savior Holy Angels (DSHA) is the 2024 champion. Wisconsin Girls Rugby also named Madison with the Team Sportsmanship Award, and DSHA’s Michael and Aimee Walsh, Julie Rausch and Michael Anich with the Spirit of the Game Award. COLORADO 7s

The state of Colorado holds two concurrent 7s seasons in the fall. There’s Colorado Interscholastic Rugby Association (CIRA), which supports competition for single-school teams; and Rugby Colorado (RCO), the state rugby organization, which provides competition for single- and multi-school teams. They name separate champions but cross over during friendly tournaments throughout the fall. Summit HS won the CIRA title, and Hammers out of Fort Collins won Rugby Colorado. Both RCO and CIRA then provide a game for their all-state teams, and are the only state organizations to do so.

PENNSYLVANIA

Rugby Pennsylvania’s fall 7s championship culminated with Downingtown hoisting the trophy. The state rugby organization then held in-person tryouts for a representative team to New York 7s. The caveat here is that several top performers in Pennsylvania had already committed to teams like Atlantis, The Rugby Advantage and EGRL for NY 7s, and thus could not represent the state. But with the wealth of options, Rugby PA was able to provide more opportunity to more players, and the team performed well in the Girls U18 Club Division.

COLLEGE

Naming honorary all-conference teams isn’t a regular practice for colleges, but a handful have taken it upon themselves to acknowledge standouts across their respective competitions. It is worth noting that NCR (to which the two conferences below belong) holds an annual 7s all-star tournament in January, and conferences contribute all-star teams for that competition: See rosters. NCR plays 15s in the fall but doesn’t name all-championship teams. NIRA, the competition for NCAA varsity programs, also plays championship 15s in the fall and will publish its 2024 All-Americans in the new year, so stay tuned. The third women’s college organization — CRAA — is rooted in the spring.
