HAMDEN, Connecticut — Quinnipiac University today announced a strategic realignment of its athletics sport sponsorship model designed to strengthen the University’s position in the evolving Division I landscape. The initiative aligns institutional resources with long-term competitive priorities, fiscal sustainability, and the University’s ongoing commitment to Title IX compliance.

Following a comprehensive review of varsity participation, conference affiliation, department resources, and gender equity considerations, Quinnipiac will add a men’s indoor and outdoor distance program enhancing participation opportunities within the existing track and field structure and will transition women’s rugby from varsity to club status at the conclusion of the current competitive cycle.

“These decisions are never easy, but they are essential to ensuring that Quinnipiac Athletics remains equitable, competitive, and sustainable for the long term,” Greg Amodio, Director of Athletics, emphasized.

Title IX compliance was a central component of the evaluation process and remains a guiding priority for Quinnipiac’s long-term athletics planning. The review assessed participation opportunities by gender, roster management practices, proportionality relative to undergraduate enrollment, and the sustainability of providing equitable competitive and developmental support across all varsity programs. The resulting realignment reflects the University’s commitment to maintaining gender equitable participation opportunities while ensuring the long-term viability and competitive health of its varsity sport offerings.

The addition of men’s distance track was identified as a high impact opportunity that advances both competitive and gender equity objectives. Key considerations included:

• The ability to expand men’s participation efficiently within an existing sport structure
• Leveraging current coaching expertise, training models, and competitive schedules
• Scalable roster capacity that supports proportional participation growth
• Alignment with Title IX participation benchmarks to maintain institutional balance

The transition of women’s rugby from varsity to club level competition follows a holistic assessment that incorporates competitive sustainability, national participation trends, resource allocation, and gender equity impacts. This transition ensures that participation opportunities remain available through a strong club sport model, while allowing the University to redirect varsity level resources to programs with greater long-term stability and strategic alignment. Quinnipiac remains firmly committed to supporting women’s athletics and sustaining robust institutional investment in women’s varsity programs.

“This action is in no way meant to diminish the dedication, effort or ability of these fine student athletes, coaches and alumni. They have contributed greatly to Quinnipiac Athletics and to the vitality and history of the University,” Amodio said.

Quinnipiac is committed to supporting affected student athletes through continued access to academic support, student athlete services and mental health counseling. Athletics will coordinate with Campus Recreation to ensure women’s rugby remains a well-resourced and organized club program and will work closely with students to ensure a smooth and respectful transition. The University is hopeful that the affected student athletes will choose to stay but recognizes that some may want to pursue opportunities elsewhere. The athletics compliance staff will work directly with any student athlete who wishes to transfer to another institution to continue their academic and competitive endeavors.

Quinnipiac will continue to monitor participation data, roster management, and gender equity metrics annually, adjusting as needed to ensure continued compliance with Title IX across participation, scholarships, and program support.

As Division I athletics continues to evolve amid NCAA governance changes, financial pressures, and shifting participation patterns, Quinnipiac will remain proactive in evaluating its sport portfolio to ensure student-athlete opportunity, gender equity, and competitive sustainability while aligning athletics with the University’s academic and enrollment mission.
