The Southern California Interscholastic Rugby Federation (SCIRF) is hosting its second-ever girls’ high school 7s championship on Saturday, Feb. 11. The Division I and Open fields will meet at Los Alamitos High School, with games occurring from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. [Lead photo: Lakewood Lady Patriots Rugby Club IG @lakewoodladypatriotsrugby)

The SCIRF girls’ league scheduled 10 tournaments between late October-February, and all of the games preceding Saturday’s championship were friendlies.

“Our model of playing every Saturday in one location continues to be extremely successful as it allows schools to opt out if necessary,” SCIRF president Glenn Jensen noted important fall events like SATs and homecoming.

Jensen also noted that the girls’ league has grown in year two, and two Utah teams even traveled to SoCal one weekend to mix it up. Midway through the season he counted nine programs putting sides on the pitch, but come Saturday, three teams – Cabrillo, Coronado and Oceanside – are not represented on the schedule.

The Division I bracket is Cathedral Catholic, La Costa Canyon, Lakewood (which has entered two teams into the final tournament), host Los Alamitos and Mira Costa. It’s a round robin, so everyone plays each other once for four games apiece, and the team that tops the standings is named champion. Same goes for the Open Division, which is Lakewood’s second team, Mission Bay and Warren.

The day is bookended by two celebrations. At 9 a.m., SCIRF will acknowledge the seniors as well as those who have committed to colleges for fall 2023. Following the final, the trophy ceremony will begin, and several women’s college recruiters will be taking it all in. DI NCAA varsity Harvard University has sent a representative, and local programs from UCLA, CSU Northridge, Long Beach State, San Diego State, UC Irvine and more will be advocating for their rugby clubs.
