August marks the end of the 2022-23 season, but there are several big events to celebrate the year’s worth of U.S. rugby. Keep in mind that the Women’s Premier League (WPL) actually straddles two season, so its August activity is actually a continuation of a season already in progress. Stay tuned for coverage.

Aug 6 – PR 7s Championship

Premier Rugby 7s (PR7s), the professional men’s and women’s competitions based in the U.S., is converging on Washington, D.C., and will name its champions inside Audi Field on Saturday, Aug. 6. If you can’t be there in person, games will live-stream via YouTube. Read more.

Aug 12-13 – USA Club 7s Nationals

The USA Club Rugby 7s National Championship is heading to the Wisconsin Rugby Complex in Cottage Grove, Wis., on Aug. 12-13. Sixteen teams apiece will compete toward senior men’s and women’s titles, and a tournament live-stream is traditionally available for free (will update). Here’s the latest on the women’s field, although more changes could be forthcoming. Scion is the two-time reigning national champion.

Aug 12-13 – WPL Fall Begins

The Women’s Premier League (WPL) kicks off the second half of its championship 15s season (read the weekly spring updates), which culminates with Oct. 7 semifinals and an Oct. 14 national final.

Berkeley @ Colorado Gray Wolves (8/12)
New York @ Life West (8/12) [TRB in attendance]
Chicago North Shore @ TC Amazons (8/13)

All of the games are recorded and posted on WPL’s YouTube. The Gray Wolves also run a live-stream through its Patreon.

Aug 25-27 – NIRA Pre-Season

The NCAA varsity programs won’t launch into league play until Sept. 1., but four National Intercollegiate Rugby Association (NIRA) teams will play exhibition games against the touring St. Francis Xavier during the final week in August. The Canadians will play DI Sacred Heart and Quinnipiac on Aug. 25, and DI Brown and DII AIC on Aug. 27. There will likely be additional exhibition games or scrimmages this weekend, and we’ll update accordingly.
