DI & DII Fall Playoffs Finalized

The USA Rugby DI College Fall Championship quarterfinals as well as the DII College Fall Round of 16 have been finalized. Teams will now report to four locations on Nov. 18-19, and narrow down to two DI fall finalists and four DII fall semifinalists. The last stage occurs Dec. 2-3 at Furman University in Greenville, S.C.

There were two play-in games for the DI bracket, one in each region. For the west seed, Davenport University scored more than 100 points for the fifth time this fall, topping Michigan State 115-7. Danielle Ordway (8), Hunter Moreland (4), Alanna Girardin (2), Olivia Ortiz (2), Maddy Sparks (2), Veronica Overbeek, Abby Overmeyer and Mariah Pruitt scored tries. Hannah Tennant (4) and Ortiz kicked conversions. The Panthers will now head to Lemont, Ill., to face Midwest champion Minnesota, and will be joined by Air Force and Texas A&M.

Boston University defeated Kent State 33-12 for the east quarterfinal spot. Regine Jacques led all point scorers with 23 on three tries and four conversions. Sam Perez Menendez and Bhakti Patel also scored tries for the home side. Dakota Steeb and Hannah Trommer dotted down Kent State’s tries, and Nicole Fogwell tacked on the conversion. Boston University will now play the Big Ten’s Notre Dame, and join Navy and UCONN in Annapolis, Md., this weekend.

In DII, the Mid-Atlantic was the only region that held four Round of 32 games. MARC champion Bloomsburg spread its eight tries around, with Selena Fernandez being the only player who scored two tries in the 46-24 win over Hartford. The Huskies will face Tri-State #3 Marist, which topped Stonehill 53-10, in the Round of 16. SUNY Cortland bettered Tri-State runner-up Albany 32-17 and will play Coast Guard, which shut out Upstate New York #3 Geneseo 87-0.

The Northeast was highlighted by the Bryant vs. Kutztown match. The Bears took a 12-10 lead into the break and extended to 17-10 in the second half, thanks to tries from Melissa Albe, Aysia Grondahl and Taylor Carr. The home side then rallied and ended the day with five tries from Melissa Mallahan (2), Brianna Zemotel, Sarah Felkel and Chelsea Doucette. Bryant advances with the 25-17 win.

New England Small College champion Colby took down New Hampshire 36-17, getting tries from Elissa Guerra, Laura Wu, Jess Edlund, Helen Sears and Emma Hofman, with conversions from Sears and Wu. Vassar trounced Roger Williams and saw senior center Kayla Lightner account for four of the Brewers’ 13 tries. And Buffalo State got the bye after Ivy club champ Penn relinquished its seed. The Northeast teams now head to Kutztown, Pa.

The West held two Round of 32 games, with Sam Houston State and Colorado School of Mines getting the byes. Winona State was grateful to get a game against at-large UW Eau Claire and outscored the visitors 102-5. Great Waters champion UW LaCrosse defeated Northern Lights runner-up North Dakota 50-15. The quartet will meet in Lemont, Ill., this weekend.

In the Midwest bracket, Cincinnati received the bye after Bowling Green State relinquished its seed and won’t have to travel far to Brimelow Fields in Fairfield, Ohio, this weekend. The Ohio Valley conference champs will face UW Oshkosh, which defeated Illinois champion Illinois State 62-24 on Saturday. Grand Valley State will also be in attendance after defeating Eastern Kentucky 46-15, as will Indiana University of Pennsylvania, which bettered Rowan 62-5 Saturday.
