All Blues Seeks Multiple Coaches

The Berkeley All Blues Women’s Rugby Club is currently seeking applicants for a wide array of staff positions. We are seeking a Head Coach to lead our Women’s Premier League (WPL) side and develop the 15s program for our Club. Additionally, we are seeking a Head Coach for our Division II team and assistant coaching staff for both sides. Pending confirmation from the League, we expect there will be a short pre-season in the fall and a longer, competitive spring season this year. The ideal candidates for these positions are committed to working with elite, senior-level female athletes to build and maintain a championship-level team that is inclusive to all playing abilities.

The Team

Founded in 1978, the Berkeley All Blues Women’s Rugby Club is one of the country’s top women’s rugby teams. The Club currently participates in a competitive WPL season, a competitive and developmental 7s season, and a developmental Division II season. The Club has won a combined total of 15 National Championships in both 15s and 7s rugby. In 2019, the WPL side finished 6th in the National Tournament, and the Division II had an extremely successful 2020 season before the remainder of the season was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The All Blues team consists of approximately 40 women dedicated to the Club and rugby. The Club welcomes athletes of all levels; current players range from elite to novice in experience. Several players regularly compete on the Women’s National Team. The emphasis of the WPL program is to compete at the highest level and to secure another National Championship. The emphasis of the Division II program is to introduce new athletes to the sport and develop players to their highest potential.

Key Responsibilities

WPL Head Coach

● Represent and protect the Berkeley All Blues values, culture, and reputation at all times as determined and communicated by the Club’s Executive Board.

Develop and implement a vision for the greater 15s program for the Club, in conjunction with the Division II Head Coach to assure a cohesive program to develop all players.

● Evaluate all members of the Team and determine rosters for the WPL-side.

● Attend all home and away matches for WPL season and National Championship.

● Organize and run all official practices for WPL-Side and collaborate with other coaches to assure a cohesive practice environment.

● Develop and refine game strategies for all league and non-league matches for both WPL-Side and the Club’s 15s program.

● Coordinate and communicate with Team-selected captains for WPL-Side.

● Make long-term decisions, in conjunction with Division II Head Coach, with the teams best interests in mind including preserving eligibility if necessary for development players.

● Provide effective feedback to individuals and the team for maximal player and team performance and development.

● Assist with selection and mentorship of Division II Head Coach and assistant coaching staff.

● Assist upholding and enforcing Club policies set by the Club’s Executive Board.

● Treat all members of the All Blues community with respect, including, but not limited to, current and former team members, fans, and members of the coaching staff.

Division II Head Coach

● Represent and protect the Berkeley All Blues values, culture, and reputation at all times as determined and communicated by the Club’s Executive Board.

● Determine rosters for the Division II side.

● Attend all home and away matches for Division II side, including any post-season championships.

● Organize and run all official practices for the Division II side, in conjunction with WPL Head Coach.

● Implement game strategies for all league and non-league matches for Division II side.

● Coordinate and communicate with Team-selected captains of Division II side and WPL Head Coach.

● Coordinate with WPL Head Coach on team decisions including preserving eligibility if necessary for development players.

● Provide effective feedback to individuals and the team for maximal player and team performance and development.

● Assist with selection and mentorship of Division II assistant coaching staff.

● Assist upholding and enforcing Club policies set by the Club’s Executive Board.

● Treat all members of the All Blues community with respect, including, but not limited to, current and former team members, fans, and members of the coaching staff.

Assistant Coach(es)

We are seeking a staff of assistant coaches to bring Attack/Defense specialization, as well as position-specific knowledge to our Club. Not all responsibilities will apply to each role, and we encourage all rugby enthusiasts to apply.

● Assist the head coach with the development of team and sub-unit strategies.

● Assist with the organization and running of official practices.

● Attend all local league matches and tournaments and the National Championship Tournament.

● Provide effective feedback to all individual team members.

Collaborate with the Head Coach(es) to agree on and execute set piece plan and structure.

● Provide effective feedback to the team as a whole.

● Assist in evaluation of athletes for determining rosters for matches and provide input to the Head Coach(es).

● Assist with game film analysis to evaluate both team and individual areas for improvement, ideally through weekly email analyses or film sessions.

● Support the Executive Board and assist in upholding Team Policies set by the Executive Board.

● Treat all members of the All Blues community with respect, including, but not limited to, current and former team members, fans, and members of the coaching staff.

Schedule

Practices are held twice weekly on Tuesday and Thursday evenings in Berkeley, California. Match schedules for the fall and spring are not yet available, and are currently contingent on finalization by USA Rugby. We expect approximately four to eight matches this fall, potentially limited to more local competition. For the WPL side, we expect there will be approximately four away and four home matches this Spring in addition to the National Championship in a to-be-determined location. For the Division II side, we expect there to be a round robin in the fall, and in the spring we expect five home games and five away games, in addition to any championship games.

Qualifications & Additional Info

Previous playing and coaching experience is required; specific experience coaching women is preferred but not necessary. The Berkeley All Blues require the completion and maintenance of a 200 Level Coaching certification or a comparable level of coaching certification for our Head Coaches, and require completion of at least a 100 Level Coaching certificate for our assistant coaches. Compensation is negotiable and commensurate with experience. These are not full-time positions. Unfortunately, the Club is unable to provide visa assistance. Travel expenses to away matches will be paid by the Club.
