Champs Named

The Majestics repeated as the Utah Youth Rugby 7s champ, a title awarded on Oct. 5. The middle school team also took top honors. The club then sent four players (Shawnee Asiata, Harmoni Hopoate, Marley Larkin, Fane Tausinga) to last week’s USA U18 High Performance 7s camp (see full roster) in Chula Vista, a selection venue for the Global Youth 7s tournament in New Zealand in December. Both the Majestics and perennial power United are hosting an important 15s tournament this Friday-Saturday (more info below). [Interview with Larkin scheduled for next week.]

Idaho held its West Ada district state 7s championships across the previous two weekends, and Rocky Mountain High School repeated with both titles. Interview with head coach Jeff Harward is in the hopper. The team really wants to add this weekend’s regional 7s title (more info below) to its accolades. Watch for Alyssa Hine to set the tone.

Westside Revenge repeated as the Rugby Indiana fall 7s champion, and Director of Rugby Aaron Poland talked about the team, season and momentum in a to-be-published interview — stay tuned.

This weekend …

Missouri Youth Rugby will name its girls’ high school 7s champion. St. Thomas Aquinas is the reigning titleholder and has posted impressive numbers this fall. A visiting Summit HS from Colorado injected an educational layer to the season, and that can only help the field aspire to the next levels.

Wisconsin gets into 15s semifinals this Saturday. The field meets in Cottage Grove, and the day starts with Catholic Memorial vs. Green Bay at 9 a.m. Central, followed by reigning champ Divine Savior Holy Angels vs. Hamilton at 11 a.m. Championship is Oct. 27 in Milwaukee.

As previously referenced, there are two big tournaments occurring this Friday-Saturday, Oct. 18-19, and they’re both in the western half of the country. In Idaho, it’s year two of a regional 7s tournament that caters toward single-school programs. Host Idaho has five teams competing, while Colorado, Oregon, Utah and Washington are also represented. The 12 teams are divided into pools of three, so everyone will play two pool games on Friday. Then the top-two teams from each pool will advance to the Saturday quarterfinals and play to place. The #3 teams in each pool have a Bowl bracket as well. The tournament ends with a luau party.

In Utah, four of the best girls’ high school clubs are getting together for a 15s tournament. The West Region 15s is a new circuit that engages teams in pursuit of higher-level 15s rugby. The reigning high school club national champion, Belmont Shore, is heading to Salt Lake City for the inaugural series event, as is DII champion San Mateo Wolverines. They’ll be joined by hosts Majestics and United — both of which have multiple national club titles in their legacies. Games occur from 2-8 p.m. MT at the SLC Pioneer Park, and they’re preceded by a BYU vs. Lindenwood women’s DIA match at 11 a.m. on the Cougars’ home pitch, Helaman Field. Again, this tournament is part of a series, so expect more info on SoCal and NorCal dates with more and different teams.

Just ahead, CIRA, Iowa and Ohio will be naming their respective 7s champions on Oct. 26-27, but get a rounder idea of what’s hitting the pitch this fall and beyond with TRB’s Calendar.
