The last College Rugby Association of America (CRAA) Spring DII Championship update occurred on March 14, and not much has changed since then. Much of that stagnation is the result of varying spring breaks chopping up the calendar, but cancelations and forfeits have also extended some teams’ idling. Nevertheless, the eastern and western regional brackets have filled out a bit, and thus an update is needed.

Since the previous update, the East has seen one significant event in terms of post-season. The Carolinas held its championship on April 1, and Appalachian State defeated UNC Charlotte 17-0 for the title. Now both teams head to the regional playoffs (April 22-23, Gastonia, N.C.) knowing their opponents. On April 22, the Mountaineers will face Florida’s Eckerd College, which held an internal scrimmage last weekend. And the Mean Green will face Capital’s Howard University, which has run out against NOVA and UVA teams, and beat George Washington 38-0 in the last two weeks.

Again, the CRAA Eastern Regionals have been easy to follow due to the Carolinas Geographic Rugby Union, the hosting organization. This is the main info page, which now houses a tournament packet.

Unfortunately, there isn’t a comparable resource for the CRAA Western Regionals, which is Friday-Saturday, April 21-22 at Stanford University. The Pacific Desert is sending two teams, and the game on which we were waiting was Claremont vs. CSU Long Beach. But after two cancelations, the match was officially logged a forfeit win for the Foxes, who take the top seed out of the conference. That also means that San Diego State is moving on as the league runner-up. Both teams have games scheduled for this Saturday, but they’re against sides that haven’t been playing competitive 15s this spring.

The West Coast officially wrapped its 15s season last weekend, and it ended with another cancelation. One’s heart goes out to UN Reno, which has the Sierras and Donner Pass between itself and the rest of the league. The Wolfpack traveled to all of its scheduled away games in San Luis Obispo, Moraga, San Francisco and Sacramento, and in some cases made those hours-long trips to play in-season 7s. Santa Clara and San Jose State traveled to Reno, and those were the only two home games in a nine-team league that plays from October-April. Sunday was supposed to be UN Reno’s senior appreciation day.

The West Coast semifinals are now finalized: #1 Sacramento State vs. #4 Cal Poly SLO, and #2 San Jose State vs. #3 UC Santa Cruz. The championship weekend is April 15-16 at the Spartans’ home facility, and the champion and runner-up will advance to Western Regionals five days later in Palo Alto.

To recap, view the brackets, which are drafted by TRB, not CRAA.
